OpenAI's ChatGPT iOS app destroys Thousands of Software Development Companies

OpenAI just released their iOS app for ChatGPT. Ignoring the fact that I personally think this is the strategically dumbest thing a software development company has ever done throughout the history of humanity - This move also destroys thousands of ChatGPT software development companies having delivered ChatGPT apps for the iOS - Inevitably, it's obviously also just a matter of time before they release their Android app ...

I'm not going to talk too much about OpenAI's stupidity, history will any ways prove me right. However, if you want the breakdowns of my strategical thoughts in these regards, maybe read yourself up on Bill Gates' thoughts about "becoming a platform vendor". TL;TR? OpenAI has basically destroyed their own eco-system with this move ... 🤪

Cannibalising an Eco-System

Do me a favour, open up AppStore on your iPhone and search for "ChatGPT". Clearly there are literally thousands of ChatGPT apps for your iPhone. Every single one of these will basically see their revenue drop to zero in a month of two. This leaves thousands of software development companies with huge gaping and bleeding holes in their revenue stream. In fact, I know several CEOs myself who have delivered such apps these last months. Every single one of these companies are now the proud owners of a "cannibalised iOS App". Which of course will have long term strategic consequences for OpenAI.

Just because you CAN build something, doesn't mean you SHOULD build it!

Obviously, if you're one of these companies, your revenue stream will drop to zero over the next couple of months from your ChatGPT iOS app - And soon also your Android SDK app. So how do you move forward from here? How do you capitalize on AI in the upcoming months?

Building your own GPT model is probably out of the question I presume. OpenAI spent 29 million dollars training ChatGPT3.5, and although Open Source models such as seen at HuggingFace have significantly reduced the price, it's still not even close to as simple as just wrapping OpenAI's APIs and create your own iOS app.
