Google Stole 68% of Your Traffic. Here's How to Squeeze Money Out of the Rest

Last month a client called me in something close to panic. His traffic was down 40% year over year. Nothing had changed on his site - same content, same SEO agency, same ad budget. He was convinced something was broken.

Nothing was broken. The internet just moved. You didn't lose your traffic. Google kept it.

The math of the zero-click era

Here are the numbers that should terrify everybody who sells anything online in 2026.

  • 68% of Google searches now end with zero clicks - the user never visits a single website
  • AI Overviews appear on more than 20% of searches, and when they do, click-through rates drop by nearly 60%
  • In Google's AI Mode, 93% of searches end without a single click to an external website

Read that again. On the majority of searches, Google now answers the question itself, and the user closes the tab. The funnel you've been optimising for twenty years didn't shrink - Google moved it upstream and kept the conversion for itself.

Your SEO agency will tell you to "optimise for AI Overviews." Your ad agency will tell you to buy more clicks. Both are telling you to rent back, at a markup, the traffic that used to be free.

When the landlord steals your harvest, the answer isn't renting more land. It's squeezing more out of every acre you still own.

Your remaining visitors are now your most expensive asset

Here's the part nobody talks about: the visitor who still reaches your website in 2026 is more valuable than a 2023 visitor, not less.

Think about it. That person passed through two AI filters that would have happily answered their question without ever sending them to you - and they clicked anyway. They wanted you. Your prices, your products, your booking page, your contact form. That's not traffic. That's intent walking through your door.

And yet most websites treat these visitors exactly like they did in 2023: a banner, a menu, a wall of text, and a prayer.

When traffic halves, every visitor doubles in value. Stop treating them like 2023 traffic.

Stop renting traffic. Start converting it

Conversion is the one lever Google cannot take away from you. And the single most effective conversion machine we've found in three years of testing is an embeddable AI chatbot - one that greets every visitor, answers every question, and asks for the sale while your competitors are still writing meta descriptions.

Our own numbers: we get about 150 unique visitors a day, and about 32 of them ask our chatbot a question. Most people who purchase a cloudlet talked to the chatbot first. And visitors who interact with an AI chatbot are, according to industry research, 300 to 700 percent more likely to convert.

Visibility is everything. Our chatbot blinks every 4 seconds, shows a popup after 4 seconds, and supports trigger buttons that turn any link on your page into a funnel into a conversation. Try it:

You can even deep link straight into a conversation with ?ainiro_prompt= - meaning your ads, emails, and social posts can land people inside a sales conversation instead of on a static page.

The receipts

Talk is cheap, so here are real clients.

None of these clients cared that their traffic was shrinking. They cared that the traffic they had started paying rent.

The cruel irony: most chatbots destroy the traffic you have left

Here's where it gets properly perverse. In a zero-click world, Core Web Vitals matter more than ever - Google punishes slow sites even harder. And yet the "mature" vendors - Zendesk, HubSpot, Intercom - ship widgets that add 1.2 to 5 megabytes of JavaScript to your page.

Do the math: 53% of mobile users leave if your page takes more than 3 seconds to load. Adding a 3MB chatbot to capture zero-click survivors is like charging admission to a burning building.

Ours adds less than 100KB in total - 4.1KB of JavaScript, 2.5KB of CSS, 0.4 seconds to load. Still, as far as we know, the smallest AI chatbot in existence. When the traffic you have left is the most expensive traffic on earth, page speed isn't a nice-to-have. It's the vault door.

Not a widget. A worker

And to be clear about what an embeddable AI chatbot actually is in 2026: it's not a FAQ with delusions of grandeur.

Ours displays images, generates images, renders charts, syntax highlights code, and can even "vibe code" entire micro apps - checkout carts, booking forms, complete with a database and an API - straight into the chat stream. It collects names and emails, speaks your visitors' language, remembers users across sessions, and escalates to Slack when a human is needed. Behind the widget sits Magic Cloud, which means it can query your SQL database and call your APIs. It doesn't just answer. It works.

The honest version

Two caveats, stated plainly.

First: an AI chatbot multiplies the traffic you have, it does not create traffic you don't. Our rule of thumb is 100 unique visitors per day - below that, spend your money on ads or SEO first, and we'll tell you exactly that.

Second: crap in, crap out. If your website data is garbage, your chatbot will be a fluent, polite garbage dispenser. Fix your data first.

Still $29, still a 7-day free trial

The entry price hasn't moved: $29 per month, OpenAI API tokens included, 7-day free trial, 30-day money-back guarantee. Create a free demo and embed it on your site in about 5 minutes.

Google can keep the clicks. I'll take the visitors who make it through.

Now back to converting 😊
